recipe for the Grey Stuff

My family recently visited Disney World, where we had dinner at Be Our Guest Restaurant.  The Beast’s castle is beautiful, both inside and out, and serves not only lunch and dinner, but an amazing assortment of desserts.

“The Grey Stuff” as featured in the popular Beauty and The Beast song, Be Our Guest, is available to visitors celebrating a special occasion on their Disney World visit.  It may also be available upon request or on the dessert cart.

The Grey Stuff is very popular, and very delicious!  Don’t believe me?  Ask the dishes! Or you can make some at home…

Ingredients:

1 (3.4 ounce) pkg Instant Vanilla Pudding Mix
1.5 cups Whole or 2% milk
12 Oreos (regular, not double-stuffed)
1 (8 ounce) tub Whipped Topping
2-3 tablespoons Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix, added slowly so the mix doesn’t turn brown
Edible Pearl Sprinkles, optional

Directions:

Mix the box of vanilla pudding mix and milk in a large bowl with a whisk. Set in the refrigerator to chill for about 8 minutes.

While the pudding is in the refrigerator, place the Oreos in food processor and blend until they are very fine crumbs – remove any large chunks that remain.

Take the pudding from the refrigerator and mix in the crushed Oreos.  Fold in the tub of whipped topping. Slowly, mix in the chocolate pudding mix and stir well.  Put the “grey stuff” in the refrigerator to chill for at least one hour before serving.

To serve, spoon onto a plate (as they do at Be Our Guest) or top graham crackers, cupcakes or brownies.  You can also use a large star tip for decorative purposes.  Top with a few edible pearl sprinkles, if necessary.

  1. Oh My Word. This is so good. Thank you for sharing the recipe!!!!

  2. So do you make the chocolate pudding or just add the dry mix to the vanilla pudding?

  3. Does anyone know how to make the base portion of the “grey stuff” pictured above….. and where to get the mould to form the little dessert tray?

    • Dawn Monroe

Hi Patti! This base is a brownie, cut into a rectangle! Enjoy!

  4. The color of mine was totally off. No idea what I did wrong, but, mine was brown.
    Delicious, though. πŸ™‚

    • Mine was brown, too, and I used less chocolate pudding than what the recipe called for. So, you’re not alone. The chocolate pudding was unnecessary. I was so disappointed.

I finally made this over the weekend. It was perfect. And wrong on so many calorie levels. I could have eaten the entire bowl. Now I have to make more for the kids!! πŸ˜‰

Thank you for posting this recipe. We just got back from WDW and my daughter wanted a “Belle” party. This was a perfect addition to her chocolate birthday cake. Didn’t taste the same as Be Our Guest’s, but my husband said it tasted MUCH better πŸ™‚

I made this on Monday and I made more by Tuesday because it was incredible and perfect! Thank you for sharing the recipe with us!

  8. Beauty and the Beast is my girlfriend’s favorite Disney movie and she sent me a picture of this from when she last went. She has been really stressed lately, so I think a surprise is in order. I look forward to making this for her, hopefully it survives the trip and lives up to the memory of the original. πŸ™‚

  9. Does anyone know how Kong this will last in the fridge? I’d like to make it ahead of Tim for the party. I try to do that so the day isn’t crazy busy. If anyone knows it would be a great help!! Thanks!!

    • I made mine the night before the party and it was still creamy.
