My family enjoys trying new restaurants when we travel. We always pass new-to-us restaurants and say “next time” because we already had plans or are already full from eating. So we started a “want to try” list. One restaurant on our list: California Pizza Kitchen.
We were excited to try something new, and when we walked in, the hostess greeted us with a smile as she welcomed us to the restaurant. We were quickly seated before our server approached us, taking our drink orders and asking if it was our first time visiting. I appreciated the fact that the restaurant even cared to ask, but little did I know, the manager would soon come talk to us, making suggestions to the menu, answering any questions we had and asking if he could bring out a “small plate” (appetizer) for my family to try! THAT is service!
The manager brought out a plate of Crispy Macaroni and Cheese. (I know your mouth is watering already!) LOOK at it:
California Pizza Kitchen takes their classic macaroni and cheese, then lightly fries it with panko, complimenting it on a cream cheese sauce. Delicious is an understatement. I am pretty sure I could have eaten all four of these, plus some.
Not long after we devoured the Small Plate, we were told our pizza was on the way! My husband and I decided to each choose a pizza, then we’d share. (Smart, right?) I ordered the California Club and my husband ordered The Meat Cravers. Then, we ordered a California Cobb Salad because somehow we thought we could share it and have pizza and a side of salad. (Later we found out we were wrong!)
The California Club is topped with applewood smoked bacon, roasted chicken and Mozzarella, hearth-baked then topped with avocado, arugula, torn basil and Romaine tossed in lemon-pepper mayonnaise. It was just as good as you are thinking.
The Meat Cravers is a manly pizza, topped with Italian sausage, pepperoni, applewood smoked ham, spicy Capicola ham and salami. I don’t know if you can top that with anything but Parmesan cheese!
Remember that salad I thought we could fit in? Turns out the greens, topped with applewood smoked bacon, avocado, chicken, tomatoes, chopped egg, basil and Gorgonzola was too much for any of us to handle, especially when you’ve just eaten half of your pizza! I love a good salad and ate a little along with my pizza. I wanted to eat more, trust me, but I couldn’t! We did box it up to bring home, and it was just as good for an afternoon snack! Next time, I might have to order this as my meal and forgo the pizza. Or just take a slice or two from my husband! Everything was just that good!
My children each ordered their favorite: Hawaiian Style! According to them, you can’t beat the combination of ham and pineapple, and I have a feeling they are right! This 4 year old ate every single bite!
We had a great experience at California Pizza Kitchen and can’t wait to go back! The service, food and atmosphere was exactly what I like to see when visiting someplace new!
