This post is brought to you by the Dr Pepper Snapple group and The Motherhood. All opinions are my own.
I recently had the chance to attend a briefing with the Dr Pepper Snapple Group, specifically to talk about their commitment to balance and active play. Since Dr Pepper is one of my favorite brands, I was happy to learn more about the company with some behind-the-scenes information.
First, I learned that there are many brands in the Dr Pepper Snapple group, including some of my most often bought products: Hawaiian Punch, Country Time, 7UP, Crush, IBC Rootbeer, Canada Dry, YooHoo and, of course, Dr Pepper and Snapple.
I then learned that Dr Pepper Snapple is the third largest beverage manufacturer in the U.S. …without a doubt after I just told you that list of products, right? The group actually offers more than 50 brands of carbonated soft drinks, teas, juices, mixers and other premium beverages. Pretty impressive, if you ask me!
We got down to business, where we were told the two major commitments of the group: The commitment to balance and the commitment to active play.
Commitment to Balance
Healthy living depends on balancing the calories you consume with the calories you burn through physical activity.
Through the existing portfolio, innovation, R&D and corporate social responsibility programs, DPS is taking numerous steps to help the people who enjoy its products achieve that balance.
With a team of highly trained and experienced subject-matter experts (scientists, engineers and specialists), DPS is dedicated to creating great tasting products. With 4 research and development labs, (the main lab being in Plano, TX), DPS is able to make decisions faster and get products from idea to marker in a shorter amount of time. They have even hired certified flavorists which require a 7-10 year apprenticeship! …Talk about a serious commitment!
DPS has surpassed its goal of ensuring that at least half of its innovation projects are focused on health and wellness for the past two years. With that in mind, they want you to be able to get a look into the nutrition content of the major products! They created dpsgproductfacts.com, so make sure you take a look at the information on your favorite drinks! In fact, they’ve also put the calorie count on the front of all beverage containers, so it’s easy to locate and read!
Commitment to Active Play
I like to get my children outside for play time every day… if only for short one hour breaks! Did you know that only 20% of children live near a park and for some kids, that is the only way they get active play? In fact, two-thirds of kids get less than one hour of play a day. So sad, right? Most kids ages 8-18 spend over 7.5 hours on media, so it’s no surprise that obesity rates have tripled in the 6 to 11 year old category. To fight that, DPS has created their Let’s Play initiative!
The Let’s Play initiative launched in 2011 and provided kids and families with inspiration, tools, and places to tackle the lack of play! Dr Pepper Snapple has committed more than $28 million dollars since the launch of the program and have impacted millions of organizations across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
Partnering with KaBOOM!, DPS has been able to provide places for kids to be active and have fun. Making playground improvements and even building from the ground up, they are giving communities a place to take their children. Amazing!
But it gets better… through the partnership with Good Sports they are able to give the tools needed to bring structured team sports to underfunded communities. DPS partnered with Good Sports to expand efforts to include older children who lack the opportunity to participate in organized sports due to the cost of equipment, uniforms and entry fees.
Since the start of the program DPS has worked with KaBOOM! to build or fix up 2,188 playgrounds across the country. Through the partnership with Good Sports they have donated $1.6 million in grants for new sports equipment to 803 organizations, impacting more than 7.5 million kids. By 2017, this initiative provide nearly 10 million kids with more opportunities to play with either new or improved playgrounds and sports equipment, helping kids achieve healthier lifestyles. More than 2,300 DPS employees have participated in KaBOOM! playground builds, racking up more than 18,000 volunteer hours. And that makes my heart extremely happy!
