As a long-term nursing mom to my four children, there were some bumps along the way in each of our journeys. For my 2nd born, I knew I needed something to help increase my milk supply after trying other options (more frequent nursing sessions, Mother’s Milk tea, fenugreek, etc.) It wasn’t until I was about to supplement with formula when I discovered this lactation cookie recipe, and boy, did it make a difference in my milk supply! (Absolutely no judgement if you supplement or choose formula!)
Lactation cookies are a great way to help increase your milk supply. The brewer’s yeast, combined with the flaxseed and oats, join forces to help a mom out and give a tasty treat at the same time! (Plus, the lactation cookies are easy to make and safe for everyone in the house to eat!)
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp milled flaxseed
3 tbsp water
1 cup flour
2 tbsp brewer’s yeast
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups oats
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup raisins
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a mixing bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until soft. Add the egg and vanilla and beat until combined.
In a separate bowl, combine the flaxseed and water, then let sit for 5 minutes. Add this mix to the first mixing bowl containing the butter or coconut oil and sugar, egg and vanilla.
Add the flour, yeast, cinnamon and salt to the mixing bowl and stir to combine.
By hand, slowly add in the oats and raisins and incorporate everything together.
Use a cookie scoop to place the batter on a lined baking sheet, placing the cookies 2 inches apart. (You can also use a tablespoon if you don’t have a cookie scoop.) Flatten each cookie slightly and bake for 11 minutes.
*This lactation cookie recipe makes 12 cookies. You can store these cookies in an air-tight container for up to two weeks. I have been told they freeze well, too!
Eating 2 or 3 cookies a day should be enough to notice a boost in your milk supply. If you still need a boost, try drinking Mother’s Milk tea or a blue powerade! (Though you should always take it slow and see what milk booster works for your body!)
