Straight Talk With Invisalign

Dawn Monroe Leave a Comment

Every time I take my children to the dentist, I’m reminded of the fact that one day, my children will need help to straighten their teeth. With three children who have several baby teeth to lose beforehand, I have time to look into my options: braces or Invisalign.

I remember the day I got braces.  I had a bad bite.  I mean bad.  Needless to say, I spent the first day of my high school summer in the orthodontist’s office getting my “metal mouth”.  For three years, I went through adjustments, pain, wax and rubber bands.  For three years after that, I was supposed to wear a retainer.  I think I only wore it for about 9 months… but don’t tell my orthodontist that.

invisalign factsI’ve been prepping myself for my son’s next dentist appointment, where I know they’ll mention teeth alignment again.   I recently had the chance to learn about Invisalign Teen, which is available as an alternative to teens and pre-teens.   I’m happy to work with them to share information about the brand, through this post, though all opinions are my own.

Invisalign Teen clear aligners are removable and can straighten teeth without turning your child into a “metal mouth”.  Invisalign aligners are almost invisible, leaving your child gaining self-esteem rather than losing it.  With Invisalign, teens can play sports without fear of injury and continue cheerleading, musical instruments, acting and singing without interference. Because it’s removable, brushing and flossing is easy and no food restrictions to worry about either.

There are some myths out there concerning Invisalign Teen, so it’s time to set the record straight. Here are a few things I learned:

• Myth: Invisalign can only treat minor or cosmetic issues.

Setting it Straight: Invisalign effectively treats a wide variety of orthodontic issues including severe bite issues. From underbite to crossbite, deepbite to overbite and overly crowded to widely spaced, advancements to Invisalign’s patented technology continues to increase the complexity of issues that can be treated.

• Myth: Invisalign is more expensive than metal braces.

Setting it Straight: The cost of Invisalign is usually comparable to the cost of traditional braces and many dental insurance plans cover Invisalign just as they would braces.

• Myth: I won’t be able to tell if my child is wearing Invisalign often enough for it to be effective.

Setting it Straight: Invisalign Teen aligners are made with small blue dots, officially called compliance indicators, that gradually fade as aligners are worn. It’s a quick visual check for parents and teens to confirm they wearing aligners long enough to get results. In fact, clinical data from orthodontists confirms that teens wear their aligners an average of 21 hours per day, just as recommended.
