We plan a trip to Disney World every 2 years. It’s one vacation my children look forward to, and I can’t blame them. It’s a week of fun and excitement, with great memories to be made.
Helping to create those memories, we have a few family Disney World traditions: always start and end our trip at Magic Kingdom, always eat a Mickey Mouse ice cream, count the hidden Mickey’s we find along the way, and always get your first haircut at Disney World inside the Harmony Barber Shop on Main Street USA.
Yes, there is a barber shop in Disney World! It’s located in Magic Kingdom, kind of hidden near the entrance, to the left (near the horse stables, in the corner.) And the prices for services are not that bad: I think we paid $18 + tip… not much more than a hair cut at your local salon. *The barber shop does not shampoo hair.
I love the way the cast members/stylists interact with and give full attention to the client, regardless of age. We’ve had three “first haircuts” in Disney World over the last 10 years, and our experiences were all close to the same — amazing!
My children were all around the 1 year old mark, and we all know the entire hair cut thing can be intimidating with so much pressure to keep still when your attention span is barely the size of a mouse. I get it. And the cast members do, too. In our three visits, each child has been given a strip of stickers to play with while sitting in the barber chair. It works, even though the son pictured here wanted nothing to do with putting the stickers on himself, but found much more joy on putting them on Mom. It only makes sense!
Each first haircut in Disney World will earn you a pair of Mickey ears, a certificate and a little pixie dust!
*Older children (as well as adults) can get their hair cut in Disney World, too. And, there’s a “pixie dust only” option.
Make sure you make an appointment at Harmony Barber Shop if you are interested, as wait times and lines can get long.
