We often take road trips, and look at the long drive for a means to talk to our children and engage them in conversation. Sometimes we play road trip games, while other times the adults in the car just want a little quiet time. (I see some of you nodding your head in agreement. You know it’s true.) Because of this, I’ve devised a list of ways we keep kids occupied in the car.
Ways To Keep Kids Occupied In The Car
Snacks – this is a sure fire way to get 5 minutes of quiet time, however, give snacks on road trips sparingly because snacks = restroom breaks.
Electronic devices – This is definitely not my first choice, but an hour here and there can be beneficial. Make sure you download some fun, entertaining apps before you leave home. (We like ABC Mouse, for one!) Don’t forget to pack the chargers.
Toys and games – I just found these amazing Find It! games from Oriental Trading. They are absolutely perfect for each of my older children (ages 7 – 13.) The Find It! Game is like a seek and find, with a list of objects to look for inside the container. You are guaranteed to keep children busy for a while with this one – especially since there are 10 different themed Find It! games available! My children work on one game, crossing off items as they are found. After an hour, they switch games to see what else they can find in a new tube! (Dad even took his turn, too!) I love that these games promote focus and concentration through play! The Discover America themed game might be my favorite, but I like the Eww Gross one just as much!
Souvenirs – If we are going to a specific attraction, I buy related items in advance. (If we’re going to the zoo, I buy tiger stickers or a stuffed monkey.) Every hour of the drive, I give my children a gift. This way, when we reach our destination, they don’t ask for souvenirs because they already have them!
