I had the opportunity to drive the 2014 Ford Fiesta last week, and I have three words: Small But Mighty.
With a family of 5, we don’t often ride in small cars. We tend to stick to vans, SUV’s and larger vehicles. But when given the chance to drive the sporty sedan with so many features, you go for it!
The one thing I couldn’t believe was the fuel economy. Fiesta SE may be born with racing DNA, but there’s no price for that performance at the pump! The SE is available exclusively as a five-door hatchback (in North America) and with a six-speed manual transmission and new 1.0-liter EcoBoost Engine, this Fiesta is projected to achieve 32 city, 45 highway, 37 combined MPG. We noted 42 mpg on our trip!
Small is Smart
In addition to the new EcoBoost engine, Fiesta boasts a best-in-class suite of technologies and features that give drivers the perfect blend of a connected world and an untethered driving experience. A new MyFord Touch system with 6.5-inch touch screen features enhanced voice control, providing drivers more options than ever for navigation, communication and entertainment functions.
The Fiesta also has Ford’s MyKey, which enables parents in particular to encourage safer driving and limit their teenagers’ exposure to risk at the wheel. The system allows owners to configure maximum speed and audio volume limits. It also mutes audio until seat belts are fastened (love that!) and ensures driver aids, safety systems and more vigorous alerts cannot be deactivated when used. Talk about putting parents’ mind at ease!
Big on Safety
Fiesta is a small car that is big on safety. It offers the following standard safety features:
• AdvanceTrac® with electronic stability control
• Dual-stage first-row airbags
• Driver knee airbag
• Side-impact airbags
• Side-curtain airbags
• Four-wheel Anti-Lock Braking System
• LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children)
• Tire Pressure Monitoring System
• Child-safety rear locks
• Anti-theft engine immobilizer
• Improved side-impact safety capabilities
During the recent EcoBoost Challenge, my husband and I were able to take a ride in a Fiesta, driven by a Pro Racecar driver! You could see how “easy” it was to handle the car, especially going at excessive speeds with turns so close. (Yes, there was an ambulance on stand-by. It may not have been there for the vehicles… probably there just for me. It was fun, but I must admit, I was a little apprehensive at first!)
The Fiesta is available in 7 different models:
- S Sedan
- S Hatch
- SE Sedan
- SE Hatch
- Titanium Sedan
- Titanium Hatch
- ST

My contributor went to the Ford Eco Boost event and said it was fun to drive the ST. Wish I was there to try it first hand too. Looks like it’s a really nice car especially with that fuel economy feature!

I was so impressed with the handling of the Fiesta, and Ford in general. Having two teenagers with permits, the MyKey feature is something that really helps put my mind at ease for just a few months in the future when I won’t be riding in the passenger seat.

I had so much fun sitting next to a race car driver in the Ford Fiesta at the Ford Eco Boost Challenge! It’s comfy, fast, and really handles corners well! Wonderful vehicle!
The Fiesta ST has 6-speed manual transmission and a 1.6L EcoBoost engine rated at 26 city, 35 highway, 29 combined MPG. The red Fiesta in your photo above looks like a Fiesta SE with a 5-speed manual transmission and 1.0L EcoBoost engine rated at 32 city, 45 highway, 37 combined MPG.
